Copyright & DMCA Policy

Effective date: July 28, 2026
Read alongside: Terms of Service · Community Guidelines

Checkmate respects the intellectual-property rights of others and expects its users to do the same. This policy explains how to report content you believe infringes your copyright, how a user can respond, and our policy on repeat infringers, under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), 17 U.S.C. § 512.

This policy applies to content shared through Checkmate's shared-list and group features. (Tasks stored only on your device never reach us and are outside this process.)

1. Designated Copyright Agent

Send copyright notices to our designated agent:

  • Agent: John Halaka, Designated Copyright Agent — Checkmate
  • Email: copyright@checkmatepriorities.com
  • Phone: (714) 584-8730
  • Mail: John Halaka, 211 S State College Blvd, Unit #10191, Anaheim, CA 92806

This agent is registered with the U.S. Copyright Office's DMCA Designated Agent Directory (Registration No. DMCA-1076613).

2. How to submit a notice of claimed infringement

To be effective, your notice must be a written communication to our designated agent that includes substantially the following (17 U.S.C. § 512(c)(3)):

  1. A physical or electronic signature of the copyright owner or a person authorized to act on their behalf.
  2. Identification of the copyrighted work you claim has been infringed.
  3. Identification of the material you claim is infringing and enough information for us to locate it (for example, the shared list or group and a description of the content).
  4. Your contact information — name, address, telephone number, and email.
  5. A statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
  6. A statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on the owner's behalf.

Please send complete notices — an incomplete notice may not be actionable. Note that under 17 U.S.C. § 512(f), knowingly making a material misrepresentation that content is infringing can make you liable for damages.

3. What we do with a valid notice

When we receive a valid notice, we will expeditiously remove or disable access to the identified content, take reasonable steps to notify the user who shared it, and record a copyright strike against that user's account. We act on complete notices as promptly as we reasonably can.

4. Counter-notice

If you believe your content was removed by mistake or misidentification, you may send a counter-notice to our designated agent that includes substantially the following (17 U.S.C. § 512(g)):

  1. Your physical or electronic signature.
  2. Identification of the material that was removed and the location where it appeared before removal.
  3. A statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed as a result of mistake or misidentification.
  4. Your name, address, and telephone number, and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal court for your address (or, if outside the U.S., for any district in which we may be found), and that you will accept service of process from the person who filed the notice.

If we receive a valid counter-notice, we may restore the content in 10–14 business days unless the original complainant notifies us that they have filed a court action seeking to restrain the infringing activity.

5. Repeat-infringer policy

It is our policy to terminate, in appropriate circumstances, the accounts of users who are repeat infringers. An account that accumulates three (3) copyright strikes within any rolling twelve (12) month period may be terminated. A "strike" is content removed following a valid infringement notice that is not reversed by a successful counter-notice. Termination for repeat infringement does not entitle the user to a refund of any unused subscription time; billing remains governed by Apple's policies.
