Community Guidelines

Effective date: July 28, 2026
Applies to: shared groups, shared lists, and any content you share with another person through Checkmate.

The short version

Most of Checkmate is private to you. These guidelines apply to the parts that aren't — shared groups and shared lists, where other people can see what you post.

The rule is simple: don't put anything in a shared space that would harm, harass, or deceive the people who can see it, and don't put anything there you don't have the right to share.

1. Where these guidelines apply

WhereCovered?
Tasks stored only on your deviceNo — private to you, we never see it
Attachments on a taskNo — attachments stay on your device and are not shared to a group
Your connected calendarNo — that's your account with your provider
A shared group or shared list (task titles, notes, subtasks, list/group names)Yes
Group display names and invitationsYes

We don't monitor your private tasks. We act on shared content when someone reports it.

2. What isn't allowed in shared spaces

Content involving minors. Nothing sexual involving anyone under 18, in any form. Apparent child sexual exploitation is reported to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) as required by U.S. federal law. This is not discretionary.

Harassment and abuse. Targeting someone with insults, threats, or repeated unwanted contact. Groups in Checkmate are small and private — that makes harassment inside them less visible and more damaging, not less. We take it seriously.

Threats and violence. Threatening harm to anyone, encouraging violence, or glorifying it.

Self-harm. Content that encourages or instructs self-harm, suicide, or disordered eating. If you're struggling, please reach out — in the US, call or text 988.

Hate speech. Attacks on people based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, or veteran status.

Sexual content. Checkmate is a task app rated 13+. Keep shared spaces free of sexual content.

Illegal activity. Coordinating or facilitating anything illegal.

Other people's private information. Don't share someone's home address, phone number, financial information, medical information, or identity documents without their permission.

Content you don't have the right to share. Copyrighted material you don't own or have permission to use. See our Copyright & DMCA Policy.

Malicious links. Malware, phishing, or links designed to deceive.

Spam and impersonation. Bulk unsolicited invitations, commercial spam, or pretending to be someone you're not.

3. Group conduct

Groups hold up to 7 people (the owner plus up to 6 members). Everyone in a group can see everything shared in it.

  • Only invite people you know. An invitation gives someone access to everything in that group.
  • Anything you share in a group, you're sharing with everyone in it — including anyone who joins later.
  • Group owners are responsible for their groups. If someone in your group is behaving badly, remove them.
  • Don't use groups to pressure or isolate anyone. Small private spaces make that easier; don't.
  • Leaving is always allowed. You can leave any group at any time, and nobody can stop you.

4. Age requirement

Checkmate accounts are for people 13 and older. The app itself works offline with no account at any age, but accounts, groups, and sync require you to be 13+.

If we learn an account belongs to someone under 13, we close it and delete the data. If you're a parent or guardian and believe your child has an account, email privacy@checkmatepriorities.com and we'll handle it — we'll respond promptly.

5. Reporting

If you see something that breaks these guidelines:

  • Report content — open the shared task and choose Report.
  • Report or block a person — open the group's member list and choose Report or Block.
  • Emailsupport@checkmatepriorities.com.

Tell us what you saw and where. We'll tell you when we've acted on it.

How we prioritize. Checkmate is run by a small team, so rather than promise a fixed deadline we can't guarantee around the clock, we triage reports by severity and act as quickly as we reasonably can:

  • Child sexual exploitation is our highest priority. We act on it as fast as possible and report apparent child sexual exploitation to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) as required by U.S. federal law.
  • Credible threats and self-harm are next, then harassment, sexual content, and copyright, then spam and everything else.

We aim to review reports of objectionable content within about a day, and we act faster on safety-critical reports. We review every report and we'll tell you when we've acted on it — we'd rather commit to something we can meet than to a deadline that sounds better.

6. Blocking

You can block another Checkmate user. When you block someone:

  • You won't see their shared content, and they won't see yours, in shared spaces.
  • Neither of you can invite the other to a group.
  • They aren't told that you blocked them.
  • You stay in any shared group unless you choose to leave; if a group owner is involved, the group owner is notified and you'll always have an easy option to leave the group.

Manage blocked users in Settings → Blocked users.

7. What happens when guidelines are broken

StepWhat happens
Content removedWe remove the content and tell the person who posted it why
WarningA first violation usually gets a warning
Final warningA second violation
Suspension or terminationA third violation, or a single serious one

Some things skip the ladder entirely and result in immediate termination: child sexual exploitation material, credible threats of violence, and coordinated abuse.

Repeat copyright infringement is handled under our Copyright & DMCA Policy — accounts that accumulate 3 copyright strikes within any rolling 12-month period may be terminated.

8. Appeals

If you think we got it wrong, email support@checkmatepriorities.com with what happened. We'll look at it again. We won't always agree, but we will always read it.

9. Changes

We'll update these guidelines as the app changes. Material changes get an updated effective date and, where appropriate, a note in the app.
